I have walked past Barbara Hepworth’s “Winged Figure” on numerous occasions previously and have neglected to take a photo of it – not this time!
I suspect that the majority of shoppers do not even realise that this wonderful sculpture is there. It was made in 1963 and is one of Hepworth’s best-known works. In 1961 following the earlier rebuilding of the bomb-damaged department store, seven artists were approached to design a piece for this site. All were originally rejected but Hepworth proposed another design which remains on site to this day.
“Winged Figure” is made from sheet aluminium and rods and stands 5.8 m tall. It was renovated in 2013 on its’ 50th anniversary.
Barbara Hepworth’s work exemplifies ‘modernism’. She was a leading figure in the colony of artists who resided in St Ives during WWII.
